Resume Checklist

Your resume is one of the most crucial tools you have to secure an interview and get the job you want.

Here is our checklist to make sure your resume is the best it can be.

  • Throughout your resume, be succinct and factual in your descriptions. Elaborate descriptions make your resume less readable and can hurt your application.
  • You can start your resume with a "Career Overview" or "Career Objectives" section but this is entirely up to you.
  • If you are currently employed, you can use a generic statement about the type of company you are employed by without naming your employer (this is advisable if you are not supplying your resume in person).
  • You don’t need to include information about your marital status, dependants or health, but there is no harm in making your resume personalised - or different!
  • For your recent positions, include the month and the year you started and finished in each position. For positions held more than 5 years ago you only need to supply the years in that position.
  • If you worked in different jobs with the same employer, include each position and the length of time in each role. This will highlight your career development and the skills you have gained.
  • If you have breaks in your employment history for family reasons, travel or education, make sure you identify them.
  • Information relevant to a specific job application should appear in your covering letter and be outlined in your interview.
  • Your resume should cover all your relevant business and life experience, not just the skills from positions in recent years.
  • Only list your private or mobile phone number and your private email address not your employer’s phone number or work email address.
  • It’s usually best to state that referees will be provided upon request unless the advertisement specifically calls for them.
  • Indicate whether a reference is written or verbal. Attach written referees to your application.
  • Make sure you seek your referees’ approval before providing their contact details. An explanation of your association with each referee is worthwhile if it is not obvious.
  • Your resume should ideally be around 4 pages long  -  and no more than 5 pages.
  • Spell-check and proof-read your resume before sending it to anyone!
  • You should also consider having your partner or a friend read through your resume before sending it.
